Through their official website, Scottish Premiership champions Glasgow Rangers have announced the hiring of former Arsenal midfielder Giovanni van Bronckhorst as their new coach, replacing Steven Gerrard.

The 2010 Netherlands World Cup star has joined the Light Blues subject to a work permit and will become the club's seventeenth manager.

Previously, Giovanni van Bronckhorst managed Feyenoord in his homeland before he was appointed coach of Guangzhou R&F in 2019.

He enjoyed success while in the dugout at Feyenoord, winning the Eredivisie, two KNVB Cups and two Dutch Super Cups.

The 46-year-old will begin running the rule over Rangers' Nigerian stars Leon Balogun, Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey in the coming days.

A fourth player of Nigerian descent in former Nigeria U20 international Nnamdi Ofoborh is on the books of Rangers but has not debuted for the club since his arrival from AFC Bournemouth in the close season due to a health issue.

Van Bronckhorst was teammates with retired Nigeria international Michael Obiku at Feyenoord and Atlanta Olympics gold medalist Nwankwo Kanu at Arsenal.
