PL 2: Two players of Nigerian descent help Chelsea defeat Leeds United
Published: November 19, 2021
Chelsea U23s returned to winning ways in the Premier League 2 after beating Leeds United 3-1 at Thorp Arch on Friday afternoon.
Andrew Myers' team were without a win in three consecutive matches prior to the visit to Leeds United, playing draws against Leicester and Everton before losing at home to a Crystal Palace side containing Eberechi Eze.
Anglo-Nigerian midfielder Tariq Uwakwe made a rare start for Chelsea, only his second of the season, while Norway youth international Bryan Fiabema entered the game as a substitute in the 69th minute.
Chelsea had an early lead as central defender Xavier Mbuyamba headed home a corner by McEachran in the 11th minute and Mbuyamba doubled the advantage with another fine header in the 35th minute.
Four minutes before halftime, Tyler Roberts stuck the ball in after a controversial penalty was awarded.
Lewis Baker restored Chelsea's two-goal cushion from 12 yards with two minutes to go after another soft penalty was awarded.
Brought in from Tromso in January 2020, Fiabema has lived up to expectations in 2021-2022, scoring 8 goals in thirteen appearances for Chelsea's development squad.
The 18-year-old is Chelsea's top scorer in the UEFA Youth League with three goals in four appearances before the mouthwatering clash against Juventus on Tuesday.
