Irish-Nigerian striker unlikely to remain a Celtic player beyond this summer
Published: June 06, 2022
Ireland U21 international of Nigerian descent Jonathan Afolabi is unlikely to remain a player of Scottish Premiership champions Celtic next season, according to reports.
The Scottish Sun has revealed the Celtic youngsters who look likely to be looking for a fresh start having not quite made the grade at Parkhead, and the Irish-Nigerian has been listed.
Afolabi's contract with The Hoops expired at the end of the 2021-2022 season and he could be departing the club on a free transfer if there's no new development.
Celtic have the option to extend his stay for another season, until 2023, but as of now, there's no official word on the fate of the striker.
Since joining Celtic in 2019, Afolabi has yet to make his first team debut and has not been included in a first team match squad, which suggests he is not in the plans of the coaching staff.
The 22-year-old has taken in loan spells at four different clubs namely Dunfermline, Dundee, Ayr and Airdrieonians.
Three other Nigeria-eligible players centre-back Osaze Urhoghide, goalkeeper Tobi Oluwayemi and highly-rated midfielder Bosun Lawal have a contract with Celtic for next season.
