Osimhen names Chelsea legend as his childhood idol, strike vs Blues his most cherished goal
Published: June 07, 2022Super Eagle striker Victor Osimhen has admitted that legendary Chelsea striker Didier Drogba was his idol growing up.
Drogba first made a name for himself at Marseille before moving to Chelsea, where he became a cult hero among the fans after starring for the Blues as they won four Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups and the Champions League.
The Ivorian, a two-time African Footballer of the Year, scored 164 goals in 381 appearances over his two spells with Chelsea.
Osimhen is currently on international duty in Abuja ahead of the national team's upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Sierra Leone and São Tomé and Príncipe.
Asked to name his childhood idol, Osimhen told NFF TV : "My childhood idol is Didier Drogba".
Osimhen was on target against Drogba's former club Chelsea in a UEFA Champions League clash on October 2, 2019, momentarily restoring parity with a brilliant header after Tammy Abraham's opener.
The 23-year-old has explained why his strike against the Blues is his most cherished goal out of his 76 goals combined for club and country in his senior career.
On the goal moment he cherished, Osimhen responded : "When I scored against Chelsea. The feeling because I know a lot of my friends that are Chelsea fans and before the game they messaged that they don't care if Chelsea beat Lille 5-1 or 5-2 as long as I score.
"They really wanted me to actualize my dream and I'm really happy. It's one of the best moments of my career."
Osimhen was the joint top scorer in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with five goals, level with Zambia forward Patson Daka.
