Arsenal manager promotes Irish-Nigerian defender Ogungbo to first team training pre-Nurnberg
Published: June 30, 2022
Arsenal have started pre-season preparations at London Colney ahead of their first friendly match against 2. Bundesliga side FC Nürnberg on July 8, 2022.
Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that apart from Miguel Azeez and Zach Awe, another player of Nigerian descent in the form of left-footed defender Mazeed Ogungbo was also promoted to first team training by manager Mikel Arteta on Wednesday.
The Republic of Ireland underage international Ogungbo stands a very good chance of being included in the Gunners traveling squad for a training camp at adidas HQ in Germany, with left-backs Kieran Tierney and Nuno Tavares not spotted on the first day of pre-season training.
First choice left-back Tierney missed the final two months of the 2021-2022 season after suffering a knee injury while on international duty with Scotland and Tavares struggled to impress in his first season at the Emirates Stadium, so much so that he has been linked with a loan move this summer.
Ogungbo is highly rated by Arteta, who included the 19-year-old in two Premier League matchday squads last term.
The Irish-Nigerian signed his first professional contract with the Gunners in the summer of 2021 and has racked up 24 appearances in the Premier League 2.
