Iwobi sees yellow, Awoniyi subbed off as Everton score late to earn draw vs Nottingham Forest
Published: August 20, 2022Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi played for 90 minutes but was booked as Everton were held to a 1-1 by newly-promoted Nottingham Forest at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.
Taiwo Awoniyi played for 61 minutes for Forest but there was no debut for new signing Emmanuel Dennis who was not utilized off the bench by manager Steve Cooper.
Everton sat rather too deeply and allowed Forest to come at them in the opening moments of the game.
In the 35th minute, Gray ran at the Forest defence and won for his team a corner. It was cleared by the visitors and Awoniyi bore down on goal for a counter attack but international teammate Iwobi handled the ball to stop his flow and received a yellow card.
There was an injury scare for Awoniyi as he was the victim of a harsh tackle by Amadou Onana with an hour played. The Nigerian was soon substituted by Morgan Gibbs-White.
Brennan Johnson grabbed Forests' goal nine minutes to full time but Demarai Gray restored parity in the closing stages of the encounter.
Iwobi had a chance to win it for the Toffees but his effort in stoppage time narrowly went over the crossbar.
