'It's a weird feeling' - Ajax star Bassey on facing his former teammates at Rangers
Published: September 08, 2022Calvin Bassey has admitted that it was a strange feeling playing against his former teammates at Glasgow Rangers.
The Nigeria international went the distance as a fantastic Ajax team thrashed the Scottish Premiership side 4-0 in their opening game of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening.
One hundred and thirteen days ago, Bassey was in Rangers colours as Giovanni van Bronckhorst's team lost on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt in the final of the Europa League.
He put aside his friendship with the Rangers players to help Ajax register an emphatic win and the highlight of his performance was providing the assist for the third goal scored by the Dutch side.
In quotes relayed by UEFA's official website, Bassey said after last night's win : "I'm buzzing, but it's a weird feeling.
"When I'm not playing against the boys I'm rooting for them and wanting them to win, but on the pitch you have to switch that focus and I'm pleased to get the win."
Bassey was happy with the win and highlighted that Ajax buried the chances they created during the game.
"It wasn't easy for us; we just executed at the right times. There's still work that can be done for us to get better and we’re pleased with the performance."
Bassey has helped Ajax Amsterdam keep a clean sheet in each of their last four matches across all competitions.
