'I always want to play out from the back' - Arsenal defender Awe on his role v Feyenoord U21
Published: September 09, 2022
With six wins and two draws from eight matches in all competitions, Arsenal U21s are unbeaten in the new season.
Mehmet Ali's side were close to making it seven wins in their last outing, a Premier League International Cup clash against Feyenoord on Tuesday evening, but conceded a last-minute goal.
Anglo-Nigerian central defender Zach Awe has been part of Arsenal U21s success story and was particularly impressive against the Dutch opponents.
He had the first real chance to give the Gunners the lead inside ten minutes but his header whizzed over the bar.
Awe caught the eye for his defensive display, showing great positioning throughout the game and eliminated most of Feyenoord's through balls.
Speaking on the role he played against Feyenoord, Awe said to Arsenal's official website post-match: "I give it also to the back four not just me. As a back four you're marking a lot. I feel like we did it very well today.
"I always want play out from the back. There are times you're getting pressed and you got to pick out a player.
"I have been working on that as well a lot in training, working on my longer balls and it's been showing a lot lately."
Awe signed his first professional contract at Arsenal in February 2021 upon turning seventeen years old.
The talented teenager has been named in Arsenal's Europa League group stage squad but was not named in the traveling squad to Switzerland for Thursday's opener against FC Zurich.
