'It was his man' - Michael Owen blames Super Eagles defender for Liverpool's winner v Ajax
Published: September 13, 2022Former Liverpool and England striker Michael Owen on Tuesday night blamed Nigeria defender Calvin Bassey for Liverpool's second goal in the UEFA Champions League Group A game between the Reds and Ajax at Anfield.
Liverpool managed to grab a 2-1 win thanks to a late header from Joel Matip.
Matip headed home from a corner kick with the Super Eagles left-back not paying attention to the Cameroonian.
Speaking during the post match analysis on the BT Sports studio, the 42-year-old Owen believed Bassey could have done enough to stop the goal from being scored.
"Look at the players. They are all marking here. This is Fabinho who's here with Blind.
"And then apart from that you basically got everybody paired up and it's Bassey, just watch it slowly (in reference to the playback on the studio's big screen).
"Bassey is actually keeping his eye on Matip and eventually, just look through the bodies, he's (Bassey) the closest one to him (Matip) so it was his man, so as Rio (Ferdinand) said, he (Bassey) simply doesn't do enough.
"He lets him get a run on him and you can't do that," Owen noted whilst expressing his thoughts on the backbreaking goal that got the Reds back into reckoning after two matches in the tournament.
Jurgen Klopp's man were humiliated last week with a 4-1 drubbing in the hands of Napoli.
