Chelsea's Nigeria-eligible midfielder rejected Aston Villa offer worth N2.5b per year
Published: October 16, 2022
England U20 international of Nigerian descent Carney Chukwuemeka reportedly rejected a significant offer from Aston Villa before completing his move to Chelsea in August 2022.
Aston Villa did everything possible to retain the talented midfielder but his mind was already made up to swap the Lions for the Blues.
According to Evening Standard, Chukwuemeka rejected a final contract offer which would have made him one of the highest-paid teenage players in the world at £100,000 a week.
The 18-year-old would have pocketed £5.2 million (approximately N2.5 billion in Nigerian currency) every year if he did not turn down the offer from Aston Villa.
Chukwuemeka saw his stock rise after starring at the 2022 European U19 Championship, scoring three goals to help England win the competition and was named in the Team of the Tournament.
Apart from Chelsea, he was also courted by other elite clubs such as Barcelona, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.
Aston Villa were forced to sell the Anglo-Nigerian to Chelsea because he was in the final year of his contract and would be available for FIFA training compensation in January 2023.
He made his senior debut for Chelsea last weekend, coming on as a substitute in the 86th minute of a 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
