Chelsea reveal why talented Nigerian fullback failed to make squad v Blackburn U21s
Published: October 23, 2022Chelsea's development squad coach Mark Robinson could not count on the services of exciting German-born Nigerian defender Derrick Abu for his side's Premier League 2 clash against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to Blackburn Rovers' visit to Kingsmeadow, Abu had started the last four matches contested by the Blues in the Premier League 2, helping them register a win and three draws.
The 18-year-old was not in the Chelsea squad that defeated Leyton Orient in the Papa Johns Trophy on Tuesday, October 18.
According to Chelsea's official website, Robinson was forced to make few changes to his starting lineup against Blackburn Rovers as Alfie Gilchrist and Derrick Abu both had knocks so failed to make the squad.
The Nigerian missed the first one month of the season due to fitness problems and has been a key player for the U21s since making his season debut against Crystal Palace on September 17.
Chelsea have not provided a timeframe for Abu's return to full training.
The Blues thrashed Blackburn 3-0 to extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League 2 to seven matches courtesy of goals from Mason Burstow, Omari Hutchinson and Ben Elliott.
