'Very strong players' - Man Utd handed warning about Sheriff's Nigerian strikers
Published: October 27, 2022
Speaking to the official website of the Red Devils to preview their Europa League clash against Sheriff Tiraspol, The Athletic UK reporter Carl Anka has admitted that beating the Moldovan champions will not be a walk in the park for Manchester United.
Anka underlined that Sheriff have very physical players in the squad including their two Nigerian strikers Rasheed Akanbi and
Iyayi Atiemwen.
Six years ago, Atienwen was in the Dream Team VI squad that defeated Brazil at the Andrade Stadium, where he faced off with
Ederson, Fabinho and Gabriel Jesus who now wear the colours of Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal respectively.
The 26-year-old helped his former club Dinamo Zagreb cause a sensation by thrashing Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 in the Europa League during the 2020-2021 season
Akanbi, who has directly participated in ten goals (7 goals, 3 assists) this season, could also cause Manchester United problems if he is allowed the freedom to do so.
Anka said on The Debate : "They made a very loud reception when Manchester United came to visit and they’ll try and play on the counter-attack.
"They have very strong players, a lot of them come from Nigeria as well, so it will not be a walkover.
"I do think Erik ten Hag will want to get this wrapped up in 60 minutes. I’m interested to know whether or not Manchester United use [Anthony] Elanga, and how they use Elanga in this game, but [it will] not [be] a walkover.
"[It is] Something to take very, very seriously, and [United will] want to make the away fans quiet as soon as possible."
Manchester United defeated Sheriff 2-0 in Chisinau in September - their first win in Group E of the Europa League.
