'No one died' - Ex-Super Eagles star Sodje clears the air on Stephen Keshi Stadium incident

Retired Nigeria international Sam Sodje, who is currently the Special Assistant on Sports Matters to Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, has dismissed viral reports in the local media that three people lost their lives following the collapse of a sports hall under construction at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.

The former Brentford central defender admitted that the incident that happened in the stadium was unfortunate but must be put in a clear and true perspective.

In an effort to deliver a world-class facility for the upcoming National Sports Festival for the nation, the hardworking Delta State Governor, His Excellency, Ifeanyi Okowa, through the office of the Executive Chairman of the States' Commission, has embarked on major construction work in upgrading sports facilities across the state especially the Stephen Keshi Stadium which is the main venue for the Festival.

Sodje commiserated with all those who may have been injured in the unfortunate incident on Thursday.

"No one died.  The crane that was being used at the Indoor Gymnastics Hall by mistake hit some blocks. The driver is okay but some people sustained injuries and the Government is taking care of their treatment. I pray God to grant them quick and special healing., " Sodje said to allnigeriasoccer.com.

"In times like this, my advice to Deltans and Nigerians is to stick together to support the Delta State Sports Commission in their efforts to deliver on the mandate to give Nigerians a successful festival rather than focusing on any unfortunate incident thus propagating discord amongst stakeholders in the sports sector.

"His Excellency, the Governor of Delta State and the Sports Commission shall deliver a successful festival to Nigerians so as to end the year 2022 with a positive attitude, peace and joy going into next year's general election."

The 21st National Sports Festival, Delta 2022, is scheduled to hold from November 28 to December 10.
