Super Eagles-eligible player lifts the lid on how his move to Chelsea came about
Published: December 20, 2022
Super Eagles-eligible midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka has explained how his move to Premier League giants Chelsea came about.
As part of their Vision 2030 project, the two-time Champions League winners pulled off a major transfer coup by luring him to Stamford Bridge, beating the likes of Barcelona and AC Milan to his signature.
Considered one of the most promising teenagers in English football at the moment, the Anglo-Nigerian ended his association with Aston Villa in August 2022 after putting pen to paper on a six-year contract with Chelsea until the summer of 2028.
Chukwuemeka first came into national reckoning after winning the FA Youth Cup with Aston Villa in 2021, scoring an impressive seven goals from his midfield position and was the heartbeat of the Young Lions side the won the 2022 European U19 Championship.
Carney and his Nigerian dad are Chelsea fans while his brother Caleb supports Manchester United because he adores their legendary striker Cristiano Ronaldo.
"I had just got home from winning the Under-19 Euros with England, one of the best periods of my career so far and my dad tells me that there's been interest from Chelsea," Chukwuemeka told Chelsea's 5th Stand application.
"I looked at him like, what? For us both to hear that was surreal. We were shocked. Chelsea? Chelsea?
"Things just escalated from then on, everything moved so quickly. I signed on the dotted line. I had a tour of Cobham and then it was straight to the pitch.
"Since I joined the group as a whole has been so welcoming. But two English lads Raz (Raheem Sterling) and Mase (Mason Mount) have helped me in particular, always giving me advice and taking me under their wing."
Since Chukwuemeka's celebrated move to Chelsea, he has received ten call-ups for first team matches and was given minutes in three - all in the Premier League.
