Everton close to finalising new deals for three players including Super Eagles playmaker
Published: December 23, 2022
Manager Frank Lampard has confirmed that Everton are close to finalising new deals for three players including Super Eagles playmaker Alex Iwobi.
The Toffees paid 28 million pounds to land the signature of iwobi from Arsenal in 2019 plus an additional 7 million pounds in performance-related add-ons.
Having struggled in his first two and a half years at Everton, the 26-year-old got his groove back following the appointment Lampard in January 2022, becoming one of the fan favorites at the Merseyside club.
Iwobi will enter the last one year of his contract at the end of the 2022-2023 campaign and Everton have moved quickly to offer him a new contract.
The Hale End Academy graduate has thrived in a new central midfield position under Lampard, with a goal involvement of seven (1 goal, 6 assists) in seventeen appearances across all competitions so far this season.
Asked at the pre-match press conference to provide an update on contract talks for Anthony Gordon, Alex Iwobi and Jordan Pickford and how close to an agreement with any of them, Lampard told reporters : "Close. That's the update. All good.
When asked to expatiate further, he responded : "We've got hopefully a situation where we want the players to stay and they want to stay here. It has always been the feeling so we're very close."
Everton restart their Premier League campaign against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Goodison Park on Boxing Day.
