Nigeria U20s waiting to hear from Crystal Palace on Goodman, Norwich City GK also invited
Published: January 11, 2023
Allnigeriasoccer.com can exclusively report that officials of the Flying Eagles are awaiting a response from Crystal Palace on the invitation of goalkeeper Owen Goodman to the Nigeria U20s squad preparing for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
Eligible for Nigeria through his mother, Goodman has accepted an invitation from the Nigeria Football Federation to train with the Flying Eagles before their participation in the U20 AFCON holding in Egypt.
However, the promising goalkeeper has not yet been released by Crystal Palace to link up with the Flying Eagles squad.
Speculation in the media suggesting that Nigeria U20 boss Ladan Bosso will fly to the English capital to hold talks with Goodman over pledging his allegiance to Nigeria is incorrect as he is not considered a marquee player in the mould of Lionel Messi that can single-handedly win them the 2023 AFCON.
Goodman has been recognized internationally, having received call-ups to England and Canada youth teams in the past but remains eligible to play for the Flying Eagles straightaway as he hasn't played competitively for the two rival countries.
It is understood that the English Football Association are monitoring developments and are planning to invite him to the Young Lions for the next internationals if he is not provisionally cap-tied by Nigeria.
There are no guarantees that Goodman will be the Flying Eagles number 1 in Egypt as he was only invited to provide competition for Nathaniel Nwosu.
It is also confirmed that the Nigeria Football Federation have sent an invitation letter to Norwich City goalkeeper David Aziaya to be part of the training camp squad.
The 18-year-old has represented the Canaries at U18 and U21 level since joining the Championship side from Kinetic Foundation, a football academy based in London that produced Super Eagles stars Joe Aribo and Josh Maja.
