Ex-Tottenham striker hails De Gea for pulling off Gordon Banks-like save to deny Iheanacho
Published: February 19, 2023
A great second half performance from Manchester United saw Erik ten Hag's side blow away Leicester City in a Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Sunday evening.
The Red Devils put in a performance of real quality and character, thrashing the Foxes 3-0, with Marcus Rashford bagging a brace to achieve a personal best of 24 goals in a single campaign, while second half substitute Jadon Sancho put the icing on the cake just past the hour mark.
Manchester United have David de Gea to thank for the fact that they were in front at half time as the outstanding Spanish goalkeeper made two brilliant saves to deny Harvey Barnes and Kelechi Iheanacho in the 8th and 20th minute respectively.
Iheanacho's header was bound for the bottom corner but De Gea made a wonder save, clawing the ball off the line.
In their official text commentary of the game, Leicester City's official website labeled the save a 'Gordon Banks-like save' from the Spaniard.
Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent, who was on punditry duties for Premier League Productions, hailed De Gea for his brilliant reflex save that kept the scores level before Rashford's opener.
Speaking at the end of the game, Bent said : "Really good movement from Iheanacho but to get down there and claw it out, what a save. Iheanacho does everything well.
"Take noting away from that save, that's what you call top quality save. Making up the ground, moves his feet, claws it from behind him, what a save that is".
Manchester United already have nine Premier League home wins this term and have garnered 23 points since the end of the 2022 World Cup, more than any other team in the Premier League.
