Official : Selles to coach Aribo, Onuachu at Southampton; becomes sixth Spanish manager in PL
Published: February 24, 2023
With a statement on their official website, English Premier League club Southampton have announced that Rubén Sellés has been appointed as Men’s First Team Manager until the end of the 2022-2023 season.
The Valencia native becomes the sixth Spaniard currently coaching a Premier League club, following in the footsteps of Pep Guardiola (Manchester City), Mikel Arteta (Arsenal), Unai Emery (Aston Villa), Javi Gracia (Leeds United) and Julen Lopetegui (Wolverhampton Wanderers).
Sellés was initially appointed on an interim basis after Nathan Jones was dismissed a couple of weeks ago.
And in his first game in the dugout, the Spaniard tactically outwitted Graham Potter as the Saints earned a shock 1-0 win over Chelsea in the Premier League last weekend.
Two Super Eagles stars in the shape of Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu, plus England youth international of Nigerian descent Samuel Edozie will be working with Sellés and their priority is to avoid relegation at the end of the season.
While Aribo is currently out of favour at the St Mary's Stadium having logged only 11 minutes in the last five matches, Onuachu has started the last two league games after making his debut off the bench at Brentford.
