Joe Aribo subbed in as Southampton suffer historic loss to Grimsby Town
Published: March 02, 2023
Joe Aribo played for 23 minutes while Paul Onuachu was absent in Southampton's 2-1 loss to League Two side, Grimsby town in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Wednesday night.
While Aribo came on as a substitute, Onuachu was given a rest by manager Ruben Selles.
The former Genk striker had featured in the last four games played by Southampton in the Premier League.
Gavan Holohan scored a brace from the penalty spot to give the visitors a two-goal advantage, before Duje Caleta-Car pulled one back in the 65th minute.
The Saints have been knocked out of the FA Cup as a top-flight club by a team in the fourth tier of the English football pyramid for the first time in their history.
The Saints are having an abysmal season and this explains why the club management has had to sack two managers, Nathan Jones and Ralph Hasenhüttl
.
If there is no upturn in form in the weeks to come, the club could lose its 11 years status in the Premier League.
With domestic distractions out of their way, all hands would be on deck at the Saint Mary's Stadium as they seek to survive relegation.
