Three reasons Chelsea should sign Napoli marksman Osimhen in the summer
Published: March 02, 2023
Victor Osimhen is having a fantastic season for Napoli, scoring 19 goals in 20 appearances for the Serie A table-toppers.
And on the back of his impressive form, top clubs not limited to Chelsea and Manchester United are showing interest in the Nigerian striker ahead of the summer transfer window.
Despite the array of talents Chelsea have in attack, Graham Potter's side is struggling to find the back of the net.
The Blues have scored 23 goals this season, the lowest among the teams in the top half of the Premier League table, and that's why they are in the market for a proven goalscorer.
Below are three reasons Chelsea should sign Osimhen :
1) Firstly, Osimhen's positional awareness is better than all the strikers Chelsea have at the moment. This is why his expected goals or xG (goals expected to be scored from chances got) are more than that of Kai Havertz and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the two main strikers at Chelsea at the moment.
The Napoli top scorer's expected goals at the time of writing this was 14.5 goals, which is more than that of Havertz ( 6.2 ) and Aubameyang combined (0.8).
With the creativity of players like Joao Felix, Reece James, Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell, Chelsea will score more goals if they add Osimhen to their ranks. This takes me to the next point.
2) Osimhen is more prolific than current Chelsea's striking options. It is one thing for a striker to put himself in a dangerous position and it is another thing for him to find the back of the net when he gets the chance.
Not only does Osimhen have the positional intelligence to be in goal-scoring positions but, he also possesses the ability to often find the back of the net when he receives the ball in dangerous positions
Not only has the former Lille striker scored more goals than Aubameyang and Havertz this season, he also scored beyond his expected goals.
Osimhen has outperformed his expected goals by 5 goals (approximately) which is more than that of Aubameyang' (0.2) and Havertz, who has performed below his expected goals.
This implies that Osimhen is not only scoring most of the goals he is expected to score, but he is also hitting the target in unexpected situations.
3) Osimhen is combining better with teammates than Aubameyang and Havertz. He has recorded more assists than the Chelsea duo.
The Nigeria international has 3 assists which are more than that of Kai Havertz who has one and Aubameyang who has recorded none.
While the 24-year-old has been receiving help from his teammates, he has also been setting up his teammates in dangerous positions.
Osimhen's ability to combine with teammates will also help Joao Felix, Raheem Sterling, Noni Maduke and others get more goals for Chelsea.
Hence, Chelsea should break the bank to sign the Nigerian striker come the summer to solve their goal-scoring problem.
