'Should have been a goal' - Chelsea legend Carney on Iheanacho's missed first half chance
Published: March 04, 2023
Leicester City are sinking deeper into trouble with four straight losses in all competitions after suffering a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Southampton in a Premier League game at the St Mary's Stadium on Saturday evening.
Despite missing several chances, Kelechi Iheanacho, a nominee for the Premier League Player of the Month award for February, remained on the pitch for the entire duration of the game.
Wilfred Ndidi came off the bench to replace Nampalys Mendy midway through the second half, Paul Onuachu was a non-playing substitute and Joe Aribo was left out of the matchday 20 by manager Rubén Sellés.
Carlos Alcaraz, the young Argentinian, got the Saints off the bottom of the table with the match-winning strike in the 35th minute.
Iheanacho had a great chance to give Leicester City the lead in the 20th minute but planted his header wide from close range after he got onto James Maddison's in-swinging free-kick.
England and Chelsea legend Karen Carney, who was on punditry duties for Premier League Productions, said she expected the Nigeria international to find the back of the net but the striker couldn't direct his header on target.
In her halftime analysis, Carney said : "Should have been a goal. Brilliant whipped in ball from Maddison and the defending from Southampton is actually shocking. Iheanacho, there, could have been a number of players just lining up to tap in.
"It just caught him off guard, didn't make the right connection with it. Thankfully for Southampton it went past but should have been a goal for Iheanacho."
Iheanacho has directly participated in ten goals (6 goals, 4 assists) in 26 all-competition appearances so far this season.
