Chelsea winger Madueke reveals he inherited self-confidence from his Nigerian dad
Published: March 15, 2023Chelsea winger Noni Madueke has revealed that the self-confidence he inherited from his Nigerian father has been crucial to his success as a player.
Madueke transferred to Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven in the January transfer window, signing a seven-and-a-half-year contract with a club option for the 2030-2031 season.
The England U21 international of Nigerian descent played youth football for Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur, before making a bold move to turn down a scholarship deal with the north London club in 2018 in order to pursue his ambition of playing first team football at a foreign club.
Madueke looked up to Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo when he was growing up as a footballer and dreamt of playing in the Premier League one day.
He achieved his ambition of playing in the English top-flight when he made his competitive debut for Chelsea against Fulham on February 3.
Madueke was determined to succeed and considers it an essential attribute for any player who wants to compete at the highest level.
"I think it comes from my dad, he’s exactly like me in that sense. If he sets his mind to do something, it’s going to happen, so I feel like I got that from him," Madueke explained to Chelsea's official website.
"For me it helps me a lot, but I feel like all the top players have it. You need to be humble, of course, but also a good type of confidence to know that you’re good enough. I feel like you need that to be able to confidently show all your ability.’
"As he continues to settle into life in west London after returning to the capital in January, Chelsea supporters will no doubt get to see that confidence and ability on display at the Bridge."
