Onuoha reveals it'd be a huge moment for Brighton star Welbeck to score against Man Utd
Published: April 23, 2023
Nigerian-born former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha has revealed that Brighton & Hove striker Danny Welbeck has a point to prove in Sunday's Emirates FA Cup semifinal clash against Manchester United at Wembley.
The Red Devils are hoping to return to winning ways after they were humiliated by Sevilla in the quarterfinals of the Europa League in their last outing.
Welbeck spent thirteen years at Manchester United, winning the Premier League and League Cup during his time at Old Trafford, before joining Arsenal, from where he moved to Watford and then Brighton in 2020.
The 32-year-old tallied 29 goals in 142 appearances for Manchester United, where he played under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Since leaving Manchester United, Welbeck, who is of Ghanaian descent, has scored four goals in eleven appearances against them.
Onuoha knows a thing or two about Welbeck as he was teammates with the former England star at Sunderland during the 2010-2011 season.
Speaking on ESPN FC, Onuoha said : "In fairness to Danny Welbeck, he'll be going out there and he'll try and prove a point.
"I played with Danny as well and he does like to wind people up and scoring against United, beating them and getting to the final with Brighton that'd be a huge moment for him.
"It's so interesting as well because after this game's finished the standing of the team that goes to play against Manchester City in that final, like how the season finishes, will dictate how much a favorite City will be because they will be favorite against both."
The Seagulls are the favorites heading into the game as they have won their last two matches with Manchester United in all competitions.
