Chukwuemeka given a run-out before trip to Argentina; Madueke also in action v Newcastle
Published: May 28, 2023
Super Eagles eligible winger Noni Madueke started from the off on Sunday evening in Chelsea's last game of the 2022/2023 season against Newcastle United which ended in a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.
Another Anglo-Nigerian youngster Carney Chukwuemeka, who made his second start under the reins of interim manager Frank Lampard against Manchester United on Thursday, came off the bench in the second half for the London side.
With Chelsea's season done and dusted, Chukwuemeka will now travel to Argentina in the coming days to link up with the England squad at the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup.
The 19-year-old was prevented from playing the group stage games because Lampard needed him as cover for two injured midfielders - N'Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic.
2017 world champions England are through to the knockout rounds of the U20 World Cup following back-to-back wins against Tunisia and Uruguay.
Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak was first to attempt scoring at the opposite end in the third minute when his effort towards the edge of the box was directed at the bottom left corner but the ball brilliantly parried away by Kepa Arrizabalaga for a corner kick.
The Toons went ahead in the ninth minute through Anthony Gordon who latched onto the ball and fired the ball into the bottom left corner after an Elliot Anderson cross
Noni Madueke won a corner kick in the 12th minute after he found his way from the attention of two markers.
Chelsea equalised through an own goal by Kieran Trippier with 28 minutes played albeit thanks to the industry of Raheem Sterling whose low shot was swept inside the net by the England international.
Chukwuemeka made his entrance in the 59th minute of the game in a double substitution that also saw Joao Felix come in from the bench.
Raheem Sterling saw his 79th minute shot inside the box hit Dan Burn but the referee simply waved 'play on' and awarded no penalty.
Madueke was substituted off by Christian Pulisic in the 88th minute but the Blues were unable to find the second goal before full time.
