'They have to get better clubs' - Ex-Super Eagles LB against automatic promotion of Flying Eagles players
Published: May 31, 2023Former Super Eagles left-back Ifeanyi Udeze has warned that players of the Flying Eagles must not automatically gain promotion to the U-23 national team immediately after their 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign in Argentina.
The team coached by Ladan Bosso will face hosts Argentina Wednesday night (2200 hours Nigerian time) in one of the round of 16 fixtures.
Sections of the Nigerian fan base are of the opinion that players of the Flying Eagles would have to make up the next Nigerian U-23 side that will not participate in the 2024 Olympics.
Of the twenty one players named on the Flying Eagles roster for the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup, seven are age-eligible to feature in the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028
They are Nathaniel Nwosu, Daniel Daga, Daniel Bameyi, Victor Eletu, Benjamin Fredrick, Kehinde Ibrahim and Ibrahim Abdullahi
"It's not automatic that the players gain promotion to the U-23 Eagles. We should not be putting these boys under pressure," Udeze,, said on Brila FM Lagos.
"They have to get better clubs first before talking about the next chapter in their international careers.
"They have to improve on their games, get new clubs and play week in, week out. I wish them all the best," Udeze concluded.
The Nigerian U-20 players have been promised landed properties and cash incentives to beat Argentina in tonight's game.
