Central defender of African descent returns to Chelsea
Published: June 08, 2023
French Ligue 1 club AS Monaco have passed up the opportunity to sign former France U21 international of Senegalese descent Malang Sarr on a permanent deal.
The Chelsea-owned central defender joined Monaco on a season-long loan last summer with an option to buy included in the deal.
His loan spell at the Principality club was disappointing as he struggled with injuries and game time.
Sarr made twelve starts from a possible forty seven in all competitions while in France, logging 1,094 minutes.
Since his arrival at Stamford Bridge in 2020, he has played in twenty one matches for the Blues in all competitions, including appearances in the Premier League, Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup.
AS Monaco Sporting Director Paul Mitchell confirmed Sarr has returned to his parent club.
In quotes relayed by GFFN, Mitchell stated: "Malang (Sarr) unfortunately got an injury, a muscular abdominal injury in training a few months ago so he wasn’t available for selection for a long time.
"Malang has already gone back to Chelsea."
A product of the OGC Nice academy, the 24-year-old Sarr is under contract with Chelsea until the end of the 2024-2025 season.
