English Premier League giants Chelsea will announce their new intake of academy scholars in the coming days, with at least one Nigeria-eligible teenager part of the group.
Allnigeriasoccer.com exclusively reported in November 2022 that Chelsea had made a decision on the future of talented teenager of Nigerian descent Saheed Olagunju ahead of the 2023-2024 season by offering him a scholarship deal, and two months later, this website reported that the defender had agreed a scholarship deal with the Blues.
Olagunju has confirmed as much, taking to Instagram to upload pictures of his signing ceremony at Stamford Bridge.
The Anglo-Nigerian youngster posed for the cameras with Chelsea legend John Terry, who has returned to Chelsea in an academy role after leaving Leicester City following their relegation from the Premier League.
Olagunju experienced U18s football last season, making his debut in the U18 Premier League in a 2-1 win against West Brom on October 29, 2022.
The 16-year-old will join Chelsea U18s on a fulltime basis in the forthcoming season and will be registered on the club's Premier League roster as a scholar.
Chelsea U18s are coached by a Nigerian, Hassan Sulaiman, who previously worked with Olagunju at U16 level.
