Super Eagles goalkeeping crisis: Moroka Swallows star Akpeyi makes himself available for selection pre-AFCON
Published: November 25, 2023
Daniel Akpeyi has said that he is ready to get back into the Super Eagles and regain the first-choice goalkeeper position.
The 37-year-old was part of the Nigerian team that finished third in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and featured in 5 games in the tournament.
He came under scrutiny for conceding the free-kick goal that gave Algeria the victory over Nigeria in the semifinals and that made him lose his place in the starting XI.
The shot-stopper has made just 2 appearances for the Super Eagles since then and has not been called into the team since José Peseiro took charge.
Since his ouster from the side, the 3-time African champions are yet to get a reliable goalkeeper with Francis Uzoho, and Maduka Okoye failing to convince while Adebayo Adeleye and Olorunleke Ojo are not trusted by Peseiro.
When asked in an interview with Goal Africa, whether he still aspires to become the Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper, Akpeyi said he is eager to return to the fold and become the number 1 shot-stopper.
"I think I'm better than yesterday. Today is better than yesterday. It's just that (I'm) waiting for the opportunity," Akpeyi told Goal Africa
He has made 19 appearances for the Super Eagles, conceded nineteen and kept 5 clean sheets since making his debut in 2015.
The 2019 AFCON bronze medalist is currently the first-choice goalkeeper of South African side Moroka Swallows and has made 10 league appearances this season, conceded 6 goals and kept 4 clean sheets.
