World-class firepower led by Africa's best: A look at Super Eagles attacking options for 2023 AFCON
Published: December 27, 2023
Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has assembled a lethal collection of strikers, wingers, and attacking midfielders in Nigeria's 40-man provisional squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations which was confirmed by CAF last week.
Leading the forward lines is 2023 African Footballer of the Year Victor Osimhen who is enjoying a prolific season in Serie A with seven goals already in thirteen games.
His combination of pace, power and clinical finishing makes him Nigeria's foremost goal threat.
Supporting Osimhen is an array of capable centre-forwards like giants Paul Onuachu and Umar Sadiq, as well as the cunning Cyriel Dessers.
Bayer Leverkusen's Victor Boniface and also offers dynamism through the middle given his tricky style of play, dribbling ability and tendency to drop deep and connect the wingers to provide them with crossing opportunities.
Out wide, proven talents like Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze are set to thrill with their mesmerizing dribbles and crosses to unleash the centre-forwards.
Emerging prospects Nathan Tella and Emmanuel Dennis also provide depth on the flanks, alongside the experienced Ahmed Musa.
To pull the strings as the creative fulcrum, Peseiro can call upon Premier League playmaker Alex Iwobi, supported by Leicester City's Kelechi Iheanacho, who boasts some experience in the number 10 role from his U17 days.
With AFCON fast approaching, Nigeria's attack doesn't just blend the goal-getting prowess of Osimhen with plenty of firepower from emerging European-based talents, it also looks to be one of the continent's most elite strike forces on paper.
If Peseiro can properly harness the arsenal of attacking options at his disposal, the Super Eagles will pose problems for any defence in Africa at next year's biennial tournament.
