PAOK delay arrival of Troost-Ekong for Super Eagles' AFCON training camp in UAE
Published: December 31, 2023
Greek Super League club PAOK have reached an agreement with the Nigeria Football Federation to delay the arrival of William Troost-Ekong to the Super Eagles' Africa Cup of Nations training camp in the United Arab Emirates.
In truth, Troost-Ekong was one of the few surprises in the 25-man squad unveiled by the Nigeria Football Federation two days ago, given that he has been involved in just one of the last eleven matches played by the Super Eagles.
Fulham star Calvin Bassey and West Brom ace Semi Ajayi are manager's Jose Peseiro preferred choice in the center of defence, a decision that has seen Troost-Ekong gradually being eased out of the Super Eagles set-up.
The former Watford man went on an aggressive media campaign to advocate for his inclusion in the Africa Cup of Nations squad.
According to our colleagues at Gazzeta Greece, PAOK managed to secure some extra days for Troost-Ekong who will depart from Thessaloniki after the game against OFI on Wednesday evening in Toumba.
Troost-Ekong is among four senior players who have captained the Super Eagles in the past not guaranteed a starting berth at the Africa Cup of Nations, the others being Ahmed Musa, Kenneth Omeruo and Moses Simon.
The former Netherlands youth teamer has started ten of the last eleven games played by the Super Eagles at the Africa Cup of Nations and was on target twice.
