'Looking to do big things' - Four-goal hero in friendly, Lookman vows to bring his A-game to AFCON
Published: January 07, 2024
Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has vowed to play at his best at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations and has also revealed that there is a unity of purpose in the Nigeria squad ahead of the start of the tournament.
Lookman is in great form ahead of his maiden AFCON appearance having netted four goals for Nigeria in a friendly game against Al Gharbia on Sunday and will be hoping he replicates the same when hostilities begin next Sunday against Equatorial Guinea.
The Super Eagles' other scorers in the today's friendly were Victor Osimhen (2), Moses Simon (2), Sadiq Umar and Ahmed Musa, plus two own goals.
The versatile Atalanta forward is seeking to make his debut in Africa's biggest football showpiece this year having made his debut for Nigeria just after the conclusion of the last edition.
The hurdle facing the 26-year-old is the competition in the Super Eagles' attack which could limit his game time but he is expected to make his debut in the tournament.
Lookman earlier today granted an interview where he detailed how and his teammates are preparing for the competition, his target, and the mindset of the team
On how prepared he is for AFCON, he told the Super Eagles Media Officer Babafemi Raji: "Just like the rest of my teammates, we are already prepared, it has been a good few days training here in Abu Dhabi preparing for AFCON and obviously with the mindset that we want together and fight for each other and looking to do big things in Ivory Coast."
On his personal target, the former Charlton Athletic winger revealed: "Just like everyone, do my best for the team and bring my A-game to this tournament for Nigeria and the fans. We'll see as a team where that takes us."
When asked about the resolution of the team, he said: "As a squad and and as a team, we have got a strong mindset and we are together, you know like the slogan let's do it again, we are fighting to do it again
"I think as a team like I said we are together, we are behind each other. As individuals, we believe in ourselves and as a team, we believe in ourselves, that is the mindset."
Lookman has notched seven goals and three assists in 18 games for Atalanta in the Serie A.
