'We're going there to do that' - Ahmed Musa confident Super Eagles can win 2023 AFCON
Published: January 09, 2024
Sivasspor winger Ahmed Musa is confident that the Super Eagles can win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria are seeking a fourth African title in Ivory Coast after they were crowned champions in 1980, 1994 and 2013, but are not ranked as one of the pre-tournament favorites with 2022 World Cup surprise package Morocco, defending champions Senegal, hosts Ivory Coast and record champions Egypt tipped as the main contenders.
Musa is a seasoned campaigner when it comes to the Africa Cup of Nations as he has played in fourteen games in the tournament and was in the team that won the title in 2013 under the legendary Stephen Keshi.
Despite the withdrawals of Wilfred Ndidi and Victor Boniface, and Taiwo Awoniyi not available for selection due to injury, Musa reckons that Nigeria are heading to Ivory Coast with a squad that will be the envy of their rivals.
Speaking to NFF TV, Musa said: "Everybody is happy in camp, excited, just waiting for us to go to Abidjan for the start of the tournament.
"Since after the last game in Uyo that the campaign started 'Let's Do it Again', we've been talking to each other that this is the time for us to go there and shine because when you see the names in the 25-man squad, you can't say we are not going there to win.
"In football anything can happen but we have that confidence. When the coach came the target he set for himself is to win the Africa Cup of Nations and by the grace of God we are going there to do that.
"The message I have for Nigerians is just believe in the team, that's the only thing we need. With their support we can go far."
Musa entered the game as a substitute in the closing stages of Nigeria's 2-0 loss to Guinea on Monday.
