Reading's Nigerian CB turns down move to Luton Town in favour of securing transfer to Olympiakos
Published: January 19, 2024
Allnigeriasoccer.com can exclusively report that Greek Super League giants Olympiakos are on the verge of confirming the capture of talented Nigerian defender Nelson Abbey.
Premier League side Luton Town had agreed a fee with Reading for Abbey but the promising defender has snubbed a move to the Hatters in favour of securing a dream move to Olympiakos who have won the Greek top-flight on 47 occasions.
A product of the Reading academy, Abbey is set to depart the League One outfit after playing in 31 games across all competitions in which he logged 2, 345 minutes.
Despite his young age, he has been trusted with the captain's armband several times in the 2023-2024 season and that's a testament to his leadership attributes.
Reading have sanctioned the sale of Abbey to Olympiakos due to their financial struggles.
Abbey is predominantly a central defender and has represented England at U17 and U20 levels, making his debut for the latter in an U20 Elite League match against Romania back in October.
Nigeria's highest goalscorer in history Rashidi Yekini, Michael Olaitan, Brown Ideye, Emmanuel Emenike and Henry Onyekuru represented Olympiakos in the past.
