'We can do better' - Lookman makes honest admission over Super Eagles goalscoring woes
Published: January 24, 2024
Nigeria's goalscoring woes in recent matches continued on Monday as they labored to a 1-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau in their final group game at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Since the start of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the team coached by Jose Peseiro have managed only five goals in six matches, an average of less than one goal per match.
You have to wonder why a team parading the likes of reigning African Footballer of the Year Victor Osimhem, Ademola Lookman, Paul Onuachu and Samuel Chukwueze are struggling to score goals.
The three-time African champions have created numerous chances at the AFCON but their finishing has not been good enough.
Of the three goals scored by Nigeria in the group stage, one was netted by Victor Osimhen, while William Troost-Ekong slammed in from the penalty spot and an own goal from Opa Sangante gifted the Super Eagles a win against Guinea-Bissau.
Atalanta striker Lookman has stressed the importance of the Super Eagles players working out a way to make the attack more effective.
"Two wins from three games, I think we defend well and win games," Lookman told reporters after Nigeria's win versus Guinea-Bissau,
"As a group, together we know we can do better in terms of our attack but we've won games. As time goes on we get better together."
Lookman has gone seven matches without finding the back of the net for the Super Eagles and will be hoping to end his drought on Saturday in a blockbuster round of 16 clash against the Indomitable Lions.
