Arsenal will not recall Super Eagles-eligible goalkeeper from loan spell at Wrexham
Published: January 24, 2024
The possibility of Super Eagles-eligible goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo returning to parent club Arsenal in the January transfer window has been ruled out.
Okonkwo joined League Two newcomers Wrexham on a season-long loan last summer and there was a break clause inserted into the deal that would allow Arsenal recall him from the Racecourse this month.
However, the Hale End Academy graduate will be staying put at Wrexham until at least the end of the season as the January 21 deadline for Arsenal to trigger the break clause has expired.
Okonkwo spent last season on loan at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz to experience a taste of first-team football, and he has built on his success with some brilliant performances for Wrexham this term.
In twenty appearances across all competitions since his loan move to the Red Dragons, he has kept ten clean sheets including eight in the fourth tier of England football.
Okonkwo is delighted that he will see out the remainder of his loan spell at Wrexham and confirmed that he has been in touch with Arsenal.
"I had no doubts that I was going to be here until the end of the season," Okonkwo was quoted as saying by the Leader.
"Our assistant coach at Arsenal looks after the loan goalkeepers and he has been in constant communication.
"I am here to stay and it's a really good feeling. Now we just push on and see how we can do until the end of the season."
NFF's technical director Augustine Eguavoen has held multiple talks with Okonkwo and his representatives with a view to a potential call-up to the Super Eagles.
