2023 AFCON: Here's what Peseiro's assistant said after Super Eagles convincing win over Cameroon
Published: January 28, 2024
Finidi George, first assistant to Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro, had a brief chat with reporters in the mixed zone shortly after Nigeria's meeting with five-time African champions Cameroon in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations clash on Saturday night.
The Super Eagles took another significant step towards winning a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title by beating the Indomitable Lions 2-0 in one of the round of 16 matches played at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan.
After Semi Ajayi had seen his poacher's strike correctly ruled out for offside in the build-up to his goal, Ademola Lookman broke the deadlock in the 36th minute and netted his second of the night in the 90th minute.
In what was billed as a blockbuster fixture, it was almost a no contest as the Super Eagles easily overcome the Indomitable Lions, with the likes of Ola Aina, Stanley Nwabali and Victor Osimhen rising to the occasion apart from the Atalanta man.
George was thrilled to see his team win their third consecutive match in Ivory Coast and has made it clear that the Super Eagles are taking nothing for granted when they face Angola in the quarterfinals on Friday, February 2.
"We won it, we are happy about the victory but nothing has been done yet," George told reporters.
"We have another match in a couple of days and we will try to see how we can win that one as well."
An Africa Cup of Nations winner in 1994, George appeared in twenty matches at the AFCON, scoring one goal.
