'Nigeria has a lot of quality players' - Bafana Bafana CB Kekana ahead of AFCON semifinal showdown
Published: February 05, 2024
Bafana Bafana secured their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations semifinal spot after a hard-fought win over Cape Verde on Saturday to set up a semifinal showdown against Nigeria at the Stade de la Paix, Bouaké.
Wednesday's clash against the Super Eagles will surely be South Africa's toughest clash at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, given that they have often struggled against the three-time African champions.
What has been great about both teams heading into the fixture is that they have caught the eye with their defensive performances having posted four consecutive clean sheets, with even the strikers willing to put in the work defensively.
Reigning African Footballer of the Year Victor Osimhen and African Inter-Club Player of the Year Percy Tau will come up against each other in the semifinal clash.
Bafana Bafana's Mamelodi Sundowns central defender Grant Kekana has admitted that the Super Eagles have a lot of quality but expects the 1996 champions to get the job done.
Speaking in the mixed zone after South Africa's win versus Cape Verde, Kekana told reporters: "Obviously it's another tough opponent. We know Nigeria has a lot of quality players, we know they've done well to also get this far but we believe in ourselves.
"We are going to go to the drawing board, plan accordingly and give ourselves a chance of getting a positive result against them."
South Africa have a little bit of a grudge to resolve as they lost 2-0 to the Super Eagles the last time they reached the last four.
