'Who wouldn't want to play in Premier League?' - Onuachu keen on Southampton return if they go up
Published: February 13, 2024
Speaking in a recent interview, Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu has expressed his desire to return to the Premier League.
The 29-year-old featured in the English top-flight in the second half of last season, donning the colors of Southampton but failed to replicate the form that earned him a move to the club.
He only started 4 of the eleven matches he played and didn't score any goal for the Saints, who would eventually get relegated to the Championship at the end of the campaign.
After failing to hit his strides in English football, the Nigeria international decided to join Turkish side Trabzonspor on a loan deal last summer and has found his goalscoring form yet again.
With 9 goals in fifteen games in the Super Lig, the lanky striker has found the net more often than any of his teammates and only has eight goals fewer than the league's top scorer Edin Džeko who has played more minutes than him.
In quotes relayed by Gunebakis via HITC, Onuachu has revealed his interest in playing in the Premier League once again but under the right conditions.
Southampton are in contention to make an immediate return to the Premier League as they currently sit second in the standings with 64 points and have a game in hand over third-placed Leeds United.
"Who wouldn't want to play in the Premier League?"But if it was going to be the same situation I was in there (before)... I wouldn't want to be there and be in the same situation," Onuachu said.
"Now, I'm happy in Trabzonspor. They play according to my strengths and qualities."
Onuachu was part of the Super Eagles that finished second in the just concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations where he made four appearances as a substitute.
