Chelsea winger Madueke subbed in as Virgil van Dijk's extra-time winner hands Liverpool Carabao Cup
Published: February 25, 2024
Super Eagles-eligible winger Noni Madueke featured for Chelsea as they missed out on winning the 2023/2024 season Carabao Cup, losing 1-0 to Liverpool at the Wembley Stadium on Sunday evening after 120 minutes of football played.
The encounter wasn't without its drama as Raheem Sterling had the ball in the net for Chelsea in the 33rd minute but Nicolas Jackson was deemed to have been offside before the goal.
Virgil van Dijk thought he had finally given the Reds the lead at the hour mark from Andrew Robertson's cross but the goal was ruled out for offside by the VAR.
The Dutchman would eventually give the Reds the lead in the 118th minute through a header from Kostas Tsimikas' corner kick.
It was a big opportunity lost for Madueke and his colleague in Blue to win their first trophy under Mauricio Pochettino with the Premier League out of sight though they are still in contention for the FA Cup.
The Anglo-Nigerian came on in the first extra time to replace Conor Gallagher as Chelsea attempted to take advantage of the injury-rampaged Liverpool side.
He made 5 appearances in the Carabao Cup this season, scoring two goals, the same number he has notched in the Premier League this term.
Chelsea's loss today is their second against Liverpool in the final of the same competition in two years, the first being in 2022.
