Valencia renew interest in Super Eagles striker Sadiq but want clarity on Afcon selection

Valencia are weighing up a renewed attempt to sign Nigerian forward Sadiq Umar in the upcoming January transfer window, as the club look to address their goal-scoring challenges and climb away from the La Liga relegation zone.

The Real Sociedad striker has endured another difficult start to the season in San Sebastián, managing only 40 minutes of league action so far.

His situation mirrors last campaign, when lack of opportunities prompted a six-month loan switch to Mestalla.

During that spell, he scored six goals in 19 appearances, playing a key role as Valencia secured a mid-table finish.

According to Blanquinegres, coach Carlos Corberán remains convinced that the 28-year-old can strengthen his squad and offer a much-needed presence in attack.

Valencia have managed just 11 goals across their first 12 league matches, a worrying figure for a team currently sitting 17th in the table.

However, the viability of any deal depends heavily on Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay, who opted against selling the striker in the summer when Valencia declined to trigger his €10 million release clause.

Another critical component is whether Umar receives a call-up for Nigeria’s squad to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Corberán reportedly wants clarity before committing to an offer, as losing a key signing for up to two months during a relegation battle would pose a significant risk.

Umar’s most recent outing for Nigeria came in March, and his limited involvement at club level has seen him slip down Eric Chelle’s striking options, with Akor Adams, Tolu Arokodare and Cyriel Dessers currently ahead of him in the national team hierarchy.

Ironically, his continued omission from international duty could favour Valencia’s plans, as it would eliminate the risk of losing him for the duration of the Africa Cup of Nations.
