London Football Awards: Olise beats Black Stars and Indomitable Lions wingers to win Goal of the Year
Published: March 01, 2024
The 2024 edition of the London Football Awards took place at the famous Roundhouse venue in Camden on Thursday evening.
The London Football Awards celebrate the very best in London clubs consisting of AFC Wimbledon, Arsenal, Brentford, Charlton Athletic, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Millwall, Leyton Orient, QPR, Tottenham Hotspur, Watford and West Ham United.
2021 Super Eagles invitee Michael Olise was the only player of Nigerian descent that took home an award, winning the Goal of the Year for his brilliant effort against Luton Town.
The France U21 international took the accolade ahead of Ghana's 2023 Africa Cup of Nations star Mohammed Kudus (West Ham United), Cameroon's 2022 World Cup star Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford), Pedro Porro (Tottenham Hotspur) and Wesley Hoedt (Watford).
Olise opened his goalscoring account for the 2023-2024 season as the Eagles were beaten 2-1 by Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on November 25, 2023.
After Teden Mengi opened the scoring for the Hatters in the 72nd minute, the Eagles equalized through Olise, who picked the ball on the halfway line, beat his man twice and curled a fine effort into the top corner.
Olise's brilliant strike was a landmark goal for Crystal Palace - their 600th in the English Premier League.
Tottenham Hotspur fullback Destiny Udogie was nominated for the Young Player of the Year at Thursday's ceremony but lost out to Chelsea forward Cole Palmer.
