'He's really doing well' - Nigeria striker not surprised by rise to stardom of Nottingham Forest star Awoniyi
Published: March 04, 2024
Seven-cap Nigeria international Anthony Ujah has revealed that he is not surprised by the rise to stardom of Taiwo Awoniyi.
The pair played together for two seasons at German outfit Union Berlin before Awoniyi left for Nottingham Forest where he has now become one of the fans' favorites.
Last season, he played a huge part in Forest keeping their top-flight status, scoring six goals in the last five games, including a brace against Chelsea and a goal against Arsenal.
The 26-year-old is one of the most clinical forwards in the Premier League at the moment hough is yet to reach the heights of the likes of Manchester City forward Erling Haaland.
Ujah has disclosed that he is not surprised by the development of his former teammate, stating how hardworking he was when they played together in Germany.
"This guy invested in a lot of work that I personally didn't do, so it was quite amazing to see someone chasing their dream," Ujah said to EaglesTracker.
"Football fans see what happens during the game day but don't see what happens during the week. You know a lot of people have to push themselves extra to be able to reach where they are.
"That he is playing in the Premier League and doing really well is not a surprise for me, he did way more than what he was expected to do and that is why you see he is really doing well and my wish for him is just to, you know, stay healthy. As long as he stays healthy, he will always excel."
Nottingham Forest's chances of retaining their Premier League status rest largely on Awoniyi and they must be hoping that he can stay fit for the rest of the season.
He has made just 16 appearances in the league this season and has scored six goals for Forest, a figure only bettered by Chris Wood who has eight.
