'He needs to respect Finidi' - Ex-Nigeria GK on appointment of Amokachi as Super Eagles assistant coach

The unveiling of former Ajax Amsterdam winger Finidi George as the new Super Eagles head coach happened in Abuja on Monday, May 13.

The Nigeria Football Federation had announced Finidi's appointment about two weeks ago but did not reveal the specifics of the deal

Finidi will be assisted by his former Super Eagles teammate Daniel Amokachi, ex-Shooting Stars central defender Benjamin James, who is based in Germany, and will also have as part of his backroom staff Mehmet Ozturk, who will serve as an analyst alongside Chima Onyeike who will be the fitness trainer.

Discussing the appointment of Amokachi as assistant coach, former Super Eagles goalkeeper Abiodun Baruwa is of the opinion that the Nigerian Federation will not interfere with Finidi's job in the future, concerning team selections and other team decisions.

"I don't think so because every administration will look for success. If you look at Daniel Amokachi he's bringing his experience into the coaching crew. He has been there before as a player and as a coach," Baruwa told TVC News Nigeria.

"That's a big experience to bring to the team, I believe NFF will not interfere between what's going on between Amokachi and Finidi. All what they just need to do is to sit down together and work out the plan moving forward.

"What Amokachi needs to understand is that he needs to respect Finidi in whatever decision he's trying to go for and just give him support, have his own opinion and at the same time support him as the chief coach."

Finidi's first assignment as Super Eagles coach is a crucial World Cup qualifier against South Africa's Bafana Bafana in Uyo on June 7, before facing the Republic of Benin few days later.

The 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner has vowed to invite for international assignments, only players who feature regularly at their clubs either in Nigeria or in the diaspora, and promised that the Super Eagles will remain even more competitive in the years ahead.
