'Didn't mention Nigeria once' - Ex-Liverpool star sets the record straight on Lookman's international loyalty
Published: June 01, 2024
Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch has denied questioning Ademola Lookman's choice of representing Nigeria over England.
Crouch, like many pundits, hailed the Super Eagles forward following his heroics in the UEFA Europa League final, where he scored a hat-trick to help Atalanta win its first ever European trophy.
In his comment as quoted in some reports, the former England international was said to have questioned Lookman's decision to represent Nigeria and not England, his country of birth.
This hasn't gone down well with the former Reds striker who has come out angrily to deny making such statements about the Nigeria international.
Reacting to the report on his X account, the 43-year-old said: "This is mad. I didn't say this. Why would I. I said he's been around various clubs worked hard and now he's performing for Atalanta. Didn't mention Nigeria once"
Lookman was born in England to Nigerian parents which implies that he could play for either the Super Eagles or the Three Lions.
Despite featuring for the England U19s, U20s and U21s, the former Everton forward switched his international allegiance to Nigeria in 2022 and made his debut for the West African side in a World Cup qualifying game against Ghana.
He has gone on to represent the three-time African champions on 20 more occasions and has scored six goals, three of which were scored in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Having starred at the last AFCON, he has become one of the key players for the Super Eagles.
