Chelsea's Madueke picks his favourite goal, names Man City star as toughest defender he's faced
Published: June 12, 2024
Chelsea winger Noni Madueke has revealed that his strike against former club, Crystal Palace was the favourite goal he scored in the recently concluded season.
The England U21 international had stops at Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur before taking a bold decision to move abroad in search of first team opportunities in the summer of 2018.
Two days after Christmas, Madueke came off the bench to score a last-minute winner after Michael Olise canceled out Mykhaylo Mudryk's opener, as Chelsea beat Crystal Palace 2-1.
The Chelsea number 11 dusted himself down to net a spot kick, awarded after a lengthy VAR review, after he was fouled in the area by Eberechi Eze.
Reflecting on his first full season at Stamford Bridge, Madueke told Chelsea's official website : "My favorite goal this season, probably Crystal Palace, obviously it's a last-minute winner. Difficult game, we probably needed the three points.
"Everyone's probably a bit nervous but the pressure at that moment on me was a lot and I was just happy that I could keep my cool and composure and just slot it."
Madueke has identified Manchester City's Netherlands international Nathan Aké as the toughest defender he has faced.
"The toughest defender I have faced, let me give someone flowers. I am just going to give it to Nathan Aké.
"To be honest I don't think anyone locked me up like you are in chains for the game but I feel like I'm going to give Nathan his flowers, he's a good defender, good player."
Madueke played a crucial role in the run-in, starting nine consecutive Premier League matches for the first time since his transfer to Stamford Bridge from Dutch club PSV Eindhoven.
Overall, he contributed to seven goals (5 goals, 2 assists) in twenty-three matches, helping the Blues secure a place in next season's Conference League.
