Liverpool set to sign Golden Eaglets-eligible forward from Chelsea
Published: July 10, 2024According to The Athletic (subscription needed), Liverpool are set to complete the signing of Golden Eaglets-eligible forward Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea on a scholarship deal, subject to Premier League approval.
The 15-year-old has chosen a move to Merseyside over accepting Chelsea's attempt to keep him at the club as well as offers from other European sides who showed interest in him.
He is said to be keen on joining the Reds due to the pathway available for young players to move to the first team, having witnessed the likes of Jarell Quansah, Conor Bradley, Jayden Danns and a host of others being promoted to the first team.
Chelsea, on the other hand, have been criticized for years for prioritizing the recruitment of young players from other teams rather than promoting their own youth players, a stark contrast to the current scenario.
In this summer only, the two-time European champions have parted ways with Ian Maatsen, Lewis Hall and Omari Hutchison who all have shown their quality elsewhere, after being given little time to do so at Stamford Bridge.
Ngumoha demonstrated his exceptional talent with the Blues, playing under Nigerian coach Hassan Sulaimon for the U18s last season while still a schoolboy, and has also trained with the first team.
He will initially link up with Liverpool U18s but will hoping to make it to the first team in no distant future.
