'Be careful mate' - Ex-Sunderland star warns Dessers after row with Rangers fans during UCL tie
Published: August 16, 2024
Former Sunderland midfielder Derek Ferguson has warned Cyriel Dessers about his attitude amid his confrontation with fans during the UEFA Champions League third round qualifying tie against Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday.
While the score was level, the Nigerian midfielder failed to control a pass which was met with huge jeers by the frustrating fans.
The 29-year-old didn't take it lightly and angrily told the fans to keep supporting the team rather than criticize and his reaction has generated reactions from the Scottish media.
Dessers' reaction became one of the post-match talking points as Rangers lost the tie to end their pursuit of participating in this season's Champions League
Speaking on Open Goal Podcast via Rangers Review, Ferguson has urged the Belgium-born forward to always maintain his cool as fans will always vent their frustration when result isn't going in the club's way.
I'll tell you what, that's when the fans kicked in," Ferguson stated.
"That's when the fans came in and gave them a wee bit back. By the way, just another wee thing. We praised him last week but Dessers, be careful mate.
"We get that you're giving your all and a bit jaded and all that, but when the fans are giving it to you, that's part of parcel of being at Rangers, Celtic, Aberdeen and Hearts. That's part of the game.
"You've got to accept that. When he started giving it that, I was really surprised. I tell you, you're in for a rough ride."
The former Cremonese forward isn't the most popular figure at Ibrox due to his shortcomings in front of goal which has proven costly for the Light Blues.
He has started the season on a good note, netting two goals in four appearances and will have the chance to add to his tally against St.Johnstone in the second round of the Scottish League Cup tomorrow.
