Done deal: Versatile tri-national defender joins Leeds United in record-breaking transfer
Published: August 31, 2024Versatile tri-national defender Isaac Schmidt is leaving Swiss Super League side FC St. Gallen for good and has moved to Championship club Leeds United.
Born in Lausanne to a Swiss-German father and Nigerian mother, he is eligible to represent the national teams of Switzerland, Germany and Nigeria.
Leeds United, through the club's official website, announced the signing of Schmidt on a four-year contract, until the end of the 2027-2028 season.
The Peacocks have acquired a versatile player who has the ability to play in a number of positions, including left-back, right winger, wing-back, defensive midfield, right-back and central midfield, but he's primarily a left fullback.
Matthias Hüppi, President of FC St.Gallen, revealed that Schmidt's move to Leeds United is the most significant transfer in the history of the club in financial terms.
The Swiss-German-Nigerian fullback is the most expensive player sold by FC St. Gallen since the club was founded in 1879.
Schmidt joined FC St. Gallen from Lausanne-Sport three years ago and was a key player for the club, making 108 appearances and scoring seven goals while producing ten assists.
In what was his last game for FC St. Gallen, Schmidt played a key role in FC St. Gallen qualifying for the group stage of the Conference League after a shootout win against Turkish side Trabzonspor on Thursday.
The 24-year-old opened the scoring after the half hour mark at Papara Park but did not participate in the shootout as he was replaced in the 61st minute.
For the remainder of the 2024-2025 season, Isaac Schmidt will wear the number 33 on the back of his Leeds United jersey.
