Super Eagles left-back Onyemaechi scores first goal for Boavista since January 2023, escapes red card
Published: September 17, 2024
Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi ended his long wait for a goal yesterday when he netted in Boavista's 2-2 draw with Estrela Amadora, which was played at the Estádio José Gomes
The left-back opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, pouncing on a loose ball from a throw-in, as he calmly struck the ball into the back of the net with his favourite left foot.
Former Manchester United forward Nani restored parity for Estrela in the 34th minute with a swift shot to the bottom left corner just from outside the penalty area.
Ilija Vukotić restored Boavista's lead five minutes into stoppage time after Estrela's goalkeeper carelessly spilled the ball from a cross.
Onyemaechi was blameworthy for the home side equalizer as he failed to properly clear his line after a pass was delivered into the area and Portuguese forward Kikas was alert to maximize the advantage.
Seven minutes before the end of the regulation time, the Nigerian left-back almost got sent off, but the Video Assistant Referee came to the rescue, and the central referee awarded him a yellow card for a foul.
Before netting in this fixture, he hadn't scored since netting in Boavista's 4-2 win over Portimonense on January 29, 2023, in a Liga Portugal fixture played at the Estádio do Bessa.
Not only did the 25-year-old fail to score for Boavista, but he also didn't get on the scoresheet during his international duties with the Super Eagles.
He could have ended his long goal drought in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Rwanda but fluffed his lines with the opportunities that came his way.
The Nigeria international has now made 64 appearances for Boavista, scoring three goals and registering two assists.
