Ndidi assists, scores OG; Nwaneri shows flashes of brilliance as Arsenal leave it late to beat Leicester
Published: September 28, 2024
Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi provided an assist in Leicester's 4-2 defeat against Arsenal on Saturday evening.
Ndidi began the match in a midfield three alongside Harry Winks and Oliver Skipp, while teammate Caleb Okoli played in defense for Leicester.
Arsenal started strongly, creating several chances and threatening to score.
They broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when Gabriel Martinelli converted a cut-back pass from Jurien Timber at the penalty spot.
Arsenal maintained their dominance, prompting Wilfred Ndidi to receive a yellow card after a frustrated challenge on Calafiori, conceding a free kick in the process.
The Gunners extended their lead just minutes before halftime when Leandro Trossard calmly slotted home a cross from Gabriel Martinelli.
However, Leicester came back stronger after the break, quickly narrowing the gap.
In the 47th minute, Justin scored with a flicked header that deflected off Havertz into the net.
He equalized for the Foxes in the 63rd minute, volleying home a cross from Wilfred Ndidi.
Arsenal regained the lead in the 94th minute when Wilfred Ndidi turned in a strike from Trossard after a corner taken by Bukayo Saka.
Kai Havertz then made it 4-2 in the 99th minute, capitalizing on a failed clearance by Justin.
As Leicester City sought to mount a comeback, Wilfred Ndidi was substituted for Odsonne Edouard, and Caleb Okoli was replaced by Abdul Fatawu.
Meanwhile, Ethan Nwaneri, who performed well midweek, and Joshua Nicholas, who made his full debut against Bolton in the Carabao Cup, were named in the gameday squad but started on the bench.
Nwaneri eventually came on for Thomas Partey with five minutes left in the game, bringing youthful energy and creativity to Arsenal's midfield, which helped restore their lead.
With this victory, Arsenal are now tied on points with Manchester City in second place.
